The Boys Book Club is about more than just reading. Five years of learning, playing, and growing have evolved because of these dedicated young men. Learn more about how the group is helping young people succeed

If you believe that "it takes a village to raise a child”, you can't look over your shoulder with the familiar rhetoric “somebody should do something about that!”  Rather, you should say, “I am somebody; I can’t do everything, but I can do something.”

Opening worlds of possibility

  • In May 2013, one young man made a public presentation in front of over 1,000 people. Read the speech
  • Currently, ten boys/young men remain in the book club.
  • During the summer of 2014, four boys/young men were part of the city’s Work Ready Program. Youth in the program worked for six weeks, at the rate of $7.25 an hour and were able to work a maximum of 120 hours.  One day a week, youth in the Work Ready Program were involved in educational activities e.g., resume writing, work attitudes, etc.

  • One boy/young man was a volunteer intern in a Culinary Arts Program.  He attended two to three days a week during the month of August.
  • During the 2013 -2014 school years, three boys/young men remained on the honor roll.  .All students continue to improve their grades.
  • Eight of the ten boys/young men will be attending various high schools in the city of Philadelphia.
  • One young man is attending drum lessons and learning to balance creativity with academics.
